Description
Luminance HDR (formerly Qtpfsgui) is a free, open-source app that provides a workflow for High Dynamic Range imaging (or HDR imaging).
You can use this app to create an HDR file from a set of images, rotate, resize and crop, copy exif data between sets of images, or tonemap HDR images. It supports both HDR (EXR, HDR, FLOAT, TIFF, PFS) and LDR (JPEG, PNG, PPM, PBM) formats.
Note: There are too many Linux packages and due to a lack of maintainers on our end you can try to download the Linux versions here.
High Dynamic Range imaging, or HDR, is a processing technique that merges multiple exposures into a single image with a beautiful dynamic range. At some point, if you’re into photography, you’ll want to explore the potential HDR imaging can have for your work.
Unlike more common editing features, processing HDR images is still something of a niche market. Especially amongst open-source image editing programs, finding a good HDR program can be tricky. Luckily, Luminance HDR packs all the tools needed for basic HDR editing and merging.
If you are looking for a lightweight piece of software that can open up the world of HDR photography for you, take a look at what Luminance HDR has to offer.
Luminance HDR Basics
Luminance HDR, formerly known as Qtpfsgui, is an open-source software suite for merging multiple photographs into a single HDR image. It’s lightweight, dedicated, and comes with everything an aspiring photographer would need to craft stunning HDR work.
The software is designed for Linux, Mac OS, and Windows. Its latest version is recent, and Luminance HDR is backed up by an active community and development team. It handles all the most common file types in terms of the files it can read and what it can export. If you’re looking to get started with HDR photography, Luminance HDR is one of the best entry level, dedicated HDR merging programs around.
The Luminance HDR Suite
Luminance HDR allows you to merge multiple pictures into a single HDR image. The program comes ready to process images for HDR merger through its multiple tonemap “operators.” These are essentially algorithms that help match tones across images to ensure your HDR image looks like one cohesive photograph rather than several stitched together. These operators can be a little vague and require some tinkering before their full potential opens up, but once you are over that minor hurdle, they get the job done. Luminance HDR also supports batch editing, which is a huge time saver when you are working with large numbers of files before merging them into a single HDR image.
Luminance HDR can be operated entirely from the command line for users who prefer speed and efficiency overlooks. You can prepare photos for merger, batch edit your tonemap, and set output file types, all without ever having to look at a graphic user interface. Speaking of interfaces, Luminance HDR looks great.
Luminance HDR has a clean graphical layout with a UI design that is intuitive and clear. You can manage your exposure values, anti-ghosting, and batch edits right there on the screen before saving your merged file. Luminance HDR comes ready to help crop and transform your final HDR image in order to clean up those leftover bits that hang over the edge of the final image.
Luminance HDR offers a sleek and quick HDR merging tool with just enough utility to make it a solid standalone program.
Final Thoughts and Recommendation
While the HDR photography craze might be coming to a close, software like Luminance HDR is still an excellent choice for fields where HDR has always been the standard. Suppose you’re into landscape or product photography and you want to start exploring HDR imaging. In that case, Luminance HDR is packed with all the essential utilities you need to compose stunning HDR photographs.
