Description

GrandPerspective is an open-source disk usage analyzer for macOS that visualizes storage with treemap views. Each file is shown as a rectangle, and the rectangle size reflects how much disk space that file uses.

The tool helps users find large files, heavy folders, package contents, and storage patterns that are difficult to see in Finder. It is the macOS counterpart to treemap-style tools such as WinDirStat on Windows.

GrandPerspective is especially useful when a Mac is running low on space and the user needs to understand what is consuming storage before deleting anything.

GrandPerspective Features

GrandPerspective features are built around visual inspection. A treemap turns storage usage into a map, letting users spot large files and clusters much faster than scrolling through folders by size.

The display is configurable, so users can color files by properties such as name, extension, file type, parent folder, top folder, creation date, or last access time.

  • Scans folders or volumes and displays disk usage as a treemap.
  • Colors files by name, extension, type, parent folder, dates, and other properties.
  • Can view package contents or entire volumes.
  • Supports navigation through folder hierarchy.
  • Can reveal files in Finder or preview them with Quick Look.
  • Includes filtering, multiple views, saved view images, and preferences.

GrandPerspective Review

GrandPerspective is strongest when users need to make storage visible. Large files that are buried several folders deep can become obvious once the disk is shown as a treemap.

The tool does not decide what is safe to delete. It helps users investigate, preview, reveal, and understand files before taking action.

Treemap Storage View

The treemap is effective because file size becomes visual. A single huge file stands out immediately, and large folders appear as grouped blocks of storage usage.

Color mapping adds another layer of context. Users can identify file types, folders, or age patterns without switching between multiple Finder views.

Cleanup Workflow

GrandPerspective can reveal files in Finder and use Quick Look, which helps users inspect files before deleting them. That is important because disk cleanup should not rely on size alone.

Filters and multiple views make it easier to compare different parts of a drive. Users can focus on a folder, package, or entire volume depending on the cleanup task.

Who Should Download GrandPerspective?

Download GrandPerspective if you need a free macOS disk usage analyzer that makes large files and folders easy to find visually.

Use it as an inspection tool before cleanup, not as an automatic cleaner. It is best for users who want to understand storage usage before removing files.
